Green Campaign – Its Role in Creating Awareness Among Malaysian to Protect the Environment

Nowadays green campaign is one of the hot topics among the Malaysian. The main objective of green campaign is to create awareness among the public to protect our environment. Green campaign not only popular in Malaysia, is also very famous in foreign country. In Malaysia there are a lot of organization organizing green campaign such as Environmental Protection Society Malaysia (EPSM), Malaysia Environment NGOs (MENGO) and Treat Every Environment Special Sdn. Bhd. (TRESS). Furthermore, from the researcher research, there also few business company supporting on green campaign such as Panasonic, TESCO, and Nippon weather paint company.

EPSM was founded on 11 January 1974 at University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. The society founded by a group of Malaysian who concerned about protecting the environment. EPSM is non-profit organization it runs by an elected executive committee on an entirely voluntary. The main objective of EPSM is to control the activities that will cause harm to the environment. In EPSM organization, public relations (PR) roles help to do publicity for the organization and at the same times help the create awareness among the public.

MENGO was formed under Danish International Development Assistance in November 2001. MENGO was an active society’s, it can give impact on the decision making at the levels of Malaysia society. The organization gives support to the Government of Malaysia on environment policies. The mission of MENGO is to protect the environment and maintain the agenda level same as local, national and international. The organization had organized a campaign on 19 April 2009 in Penang Bosch Hall to discuss plastic bags should be ban or not to ban.

TREES is a local non-profit environment organization. The organization founded in February 1995. The main purpose of TREES is to educate public the important of protect our environment and reduce negative impact for our environment. TREES organizations had organized two successfully programs in this year. On 14th February 2009 they had organized Valentine’s Pledge for Mother Earth, the program use to encourage the public send a photograph with a caption that how you protect the environment so that can share with each others. Furthermore, on 13th March the organization organized community recycling campaign at Ampang, this activity help to reduce the air pollution. There are a lot of people participated in these two events. The events are very meaningful and bring benefit to our environment.

Panasonic Sdn. Bhd. is one of the electronic company’s had designed out an eco-refrigerator to support green campaign and the product have successfully launched in Malaysia. It’s able to be self adjusting electricity regulator that reduces the wastage. Compare with other brand of refrigerator the Panasonic refrigerator able to save 40% of the electricity. It helps fight global warming and save money all the time. Panasonic electronic company in United State America also concerns for environmental protection and sustainability. The company’s practices prudent, sustainable use of the earth’s natural resources and the protection of the environment. Together with many benefits associated with the use and enjoyment of new technologies comes with responsibility that do not take lightly. The company hopes that this commitment able to protecting the environment continues to earn public trust and support.

Besides that, TESCO hypermarket had designed an eco-friendly recycle bag. The purpose is to encourage the consumer to use the recycle bag instead of using the plastic bag. Those consumers who using the recycle bag when purchase the goods can gain extra point for the member card. Furthermore, all the Tesco in Penang have applied the same rules that set by the Penang state government. Tesco hypermarket in Penang state not give out plastic bag for the consumer on every Monday. In foreign country, Tesco is the most environmentally friendly supermarket. Tesco had wins a award for being the best big company for corporate environmental strategy, has invested £115m in energy-saving technology for its stores in the past two years and is working hard to create the zero carbon supermarket of the future.

Malaysia Government also supporting green campaign. On 28th March 2009 the government encouraged whole Malaysian to switch off their lights from 8.00pm until 9.00pm. KL tower and 8TV is one of the company’s supporting this program. In this program, PR practitioners help the government to spread out all the information and do publicity on the activities. Besides, to support green campaign Penang state had already ban the consumer using plastic bag on every Monday. The purpose of this program is to encourage the consumer use recycle bag for those consumers who require for a plastic bag on Monday need to pay 20sen for it.

Thus, University Sains Malaysia (USM) an university in Malaysia shows support on green campaign. USM have organized a lot of campaign encourage the student to take care of our environment. Besides that, USM also joined with Tupperware Company to support the green campaign. Tupperware Company provided each student who studies in USM a plastic container for daily use. When student need to packing the food can use plastic container instate of using plastic bag. This help to save one plastic bag for our mother earth.

Not only Malaysia had green campaign there are a lot of green campaign in the foreign. Such as Disney land from foreign country had set up a Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) found that Walt Disney World uses more than 80 extremely toxic cleaners, as opposed to just 12 that are non-toxic and which are used in the animal park out of safety concerns for the animals. Disney land is for children to pay visit in the park. At the same time it also can let the children “bathe, eat and play.” CHEJ and community groups in Florida are urging Disney to use safer cleaning products for the sake of the children.

The main objective of the researcher is to create awareness among the public to be more concern about our environment and to let the public knows that protect our environment is our responsible.

There are few journals collected by the researcher for references purpose. From the researcher research, a campaign use to organize a series of activities to try to achieve something. A purpose of a campaign is use to get attention from the public and to promote a new product, or launch a new product. For a PR campaign mostly use to do publicity and create awareness among the public.

According to Singh (2007), nowadays our environment facing a lot of problem and it became more serious. Hopefully the committee can influence all the Malaysia society care about the environment and the problem can be solves easily. Toward EPSM the public able to understand what is green campaign.

As a parent needs to educate their children how to take care our environment. Reading about environment is not boring it is very helpful to everyone. Know about environment issues help to enlarge personal knowledge about something new. Do not let media to confuse us, as a responsible Malaysian we should use simple way to show others public what to do. (Wahid,2009).

Ohana (2007) define that environment education is very important. This education will influence the future individual human beings, the nation, and the whole world. The world environment will be affect depends on how human use science and technology in future. So that, science education must be prepare for the student. This because most of the decisions makes by the student will be revolves around issues of the environment in future.

Adebobola (2004) argue that the environmental problem become more serious this because the industrial growth very fast. Although some regions were virtually untouched by the inhabitants but there still got large areas been affected. This cause the organization Environment department of Africa concern in the major coexisting issues in the world.

Penang government had come out a new rules stated that start from 1st July no plastic bag on every Monday. There are a lot of people disagree with the rules. This because they say is not convenience when the purchase foods and goods make them feel so inconvenient. According to Yu (2009) mostly consumer using plastic bag for a rubbish bag if really want to apply the rules, Penang government need support form media. According to Yeap (2009), he claimed that every people should follow the rules and at the same time can educate and encourage others to recycle.

From the researcher research, there are two theories can be applied in the research. There are Interaction Theory and Klapper’s Reinforcement Theory.

Interaction theory means influence a medium has over its audience is proportional to the amount of effort involved in consuming it. According to Ken Spencer humans remember only 10 percent of what they read, 20 percent of what they hear, and 30 percent of what they see. However, memory improves to 50 percent for those who see and hear something, and 90 percent if the person is actively involved in the process or event instead of merely observing it. This theory can be illustrated by considering the results of staged events involving audience participation. So, to encourage the public to take in green campaign, the organization needs to encourage the public to participate in the activities.

Klapper’s Reinforcement Theory maintains the media cannot create opinions from scratch, but can be effective in reinforcing existing beliefs and attitudes or bringing latent beliefs and attitudes to the surface and encouraging individuals to act on them. In this theory, shows that even media not that powerful can influence people thinking but at least can lead the public to concern about the environment issues.

Qualitative research is a field of inquiry applicable to many disciplines and subject matters. Qualitative researchers aim to gather an in-depth understanding of human behavior and the reasons that govern such behavior. The qualitative method investigates the why and how of decision making. Hence, smaller but focused samples are more often needed, rather than large random samples

Quantitative research means the variable under consideration should be measured. It is an element of precision, as it uses numbers to quantify result. The process of measurement is central to quantitative research because it provides the fundamental connection between empirical observation and mathematical expression of quantitative relationships. The term quantitative research is most often used in the social sciences in contrast to qualitative research.

The researcher use both quantitative and qualitative research method in this study. In which includes the survey questionnaire and intensive interview to the relevant people so that the researcher can get more detail information.

There will be 11 questions for the survey questionnaire. Inside the questionnaire include, 5 dichotomous response questions, 3 multiple-choice questions and 3 open-ended questions. All the survey questions will be set based on the relevant to green campaign.

There are 100 copies questionnaire will be distributed to UTAR and KTAR student in Perak campus. Both UTAR and KTAR will be distributed 50 copies of questionnaire, from 50 set of questionnaire will be divided to half that mean 25 set, for both male and female. The reason that the researcher choose UTAR Perak campus because it is the biggest campus in whole Malaysia compare to other campus. Besides that, the researcher also had chosen KTAR Perak campus to distribute the questionnaire it is because the Perak campus is second largest and newest campus in Malaysia. Thus, the researcher choose UTAR and KTAR student as target audience, is because compare to other university UTAR and KTAR have more student and it can represent the majority of teenagers.

The researcher set target audience as college and university student the age range is around 18 to 23. It is because college and university student will become new generation in future of the society. So, their perception of green campaign is very important for the research.

Besides that, an intensive interview will be conducted with ESPM Manager Gurmit Singh to understand the view of him and why he form up ESPM organization. He is the advisor and founder president of ESPM. Another interview will conducted with the Panasonic product marketing general manager Cheng Chee Chung to understand why Panasonic need to came up the eco-refrigerator.

Both interviews will take around one hour. The researcher had set up 2 set of different interview questions for the EPSM president and Panasonic marketing general manager because both of them have their own perception toward green campaign.

Myelodysplastic Syndrome – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a group of blood disorders characterized by a dysfunctional bone marrow resulting in ineffective blood-cell production. Signs and symptoms include anemia, fatigue, fever, heart disease, bleeding from different parts of the body, reduced urine output and shock. MDS can be either primary with no known cause or secondary, which results from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, viral infection, exposure to chemicals or a genetic predisposition.

The Ayurvedic treatment of MDS is aimed at reducing symptoms, treating the basic pathology of the disease and improving the quality of life. Medicines which act on the dysfunctional bone marrow form the main stay of treatment for this condition. These include Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Trayodashang-Guggulu, Mahamanjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivasav, Lohasav, Guduchyadi-Qadha, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut, Suvarna-Parpati, Suvarna-Sutshekhar-Ras, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma. Herbal medicines which can be used for this purpose are: Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Chirayta (Swertia chirata), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Kutaj (Holarrhina antidysentrica) and Nimba (Azadirachta indica).

Medicines like Tapyadi-Loh, Punarnavadi-Mandur and Lohasav are used to treat anemia. Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka), Naagkeshar (Messua ferrea), Laxa (Purified wax) and Sphatik-Bhasma are used to treat bleeding from any part of the body. Medicines like Arjunarishta, Dashmoolarishta, Drakshasav, Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Shrung-Bhasma and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani are used to treat fatigue, heart disease and heart failure. Medicines like Sukshma-Triphala, Laxmi-Narayan-Ras and Maha-Sudarshan-Churna are used to treat fever.

A special type of medicated enema, known as ‘Tikta- Ksheer- Basti’, is used to treat disorders related to the bone marrow. Milk is boiled with medicines like Guduchi, Amalaki, Musta and Patol. Other medicines like Panch-Tikta-Ghrut are added to this milk, which is then given in the form of enema. Repeated courses of such enemas are given for several months. This Panchkarma procedure has special importance in the treatment of MDS. Ayurvedic medicines can be given in combination with modern treatment for MDS, such as packed-cell transfusions.

MDS can either run an acute or a chronic course and often progresses to blood cancer, with a potentially fatal outcome. All patients affected with MDS should therefore be under the regular care and supervision of a Hematologist.

Signs of Cocaine Use – What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Cocaine Use?

Cocaine (aka coke, crack, snow, blow) is an addiction that can occur very quickly and be a very difficult habit to break. There have been animal studies, which have shown that animals will work very hard, such as pressing a bar over 10,000 times, after a single injection of cocaine. They were also choosing cocaine over food and water and chose cocaine even when their behavior was punished. It was proven that animals must have their access to cocaine limited in order not to take lethal doses. Studies have shown that people addicted to cocaine also behaved very similar. One of the signs of Cocaine use is that Cocaine addicts will go to great lengths to get cocaine and continue to take it even when it hurts their school or job performance and their relationships begin to suffer.

Some of the major routes of administration of cocaine are sniffing or snorting, injecting, and smoking, including free-basing and crack cocaine. Snorting is the process of inhaling cocaine powder through the nose where it is absorbed into the bloodstream through the nasal tissues. Injecting is the act of using a needle to release the drug directly into the bloodstream. Smoking involves inhaling cocaine vapor or smoke into the lungs where absorption into the bloodstream is as rapid as by injection.

“Crack” or “crack cocaine” is the street name given to cocaine that has been processed from cocaine hydrochloride to a free base for smoking.

Rather than requiring the more volatile method of processing cocaine-using ether, crack cocaine is processed with ammonia or sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and water and heated to remove the hydrochloride, thus producing a form of cocaine that can be smoked. The term “crack” refers to the crackling sound heard when the mixture is smoked (heated), presumably from the sodium bicarbonate.

Cocaine is a strong central nervous system stimulant that interferes with the reabsorption process of dopamine, a chemical messenger associated with pleasure and movement. Dopamine is released as part of the brain’s reward system and is involved in the high that characterizes cocaine consumption.

Signs of Cocaine use include constricted peripheral blood vessels, dilated pupils, increased temperature, heart rate and blood pressure, hyper-alertness, lack of fatigue/sleeplessness, panic, extremely talkative; fast speech, runny nose or bloody nose, seizures from high doses or bad reaction, white powder seen on face or clothes, small spoon-like items used for snorting, mirrors and razor blades used for making lines, rolled money bills used for snorting, small bottles with screw on lids for storing and possession of small plastic packets with white residue.

The duration of cocaine’s immediate euphoric effects, which include hyper-stimulation, reduced fatigue, and mental clarity, depends on the route of administration. The faster the absorption, the more intense the high. On the other hand, the faster the absorption, the shorter the duration of action. The high from snorting may last 15 to 30 minutes, while that from smoking may last 5 to 10 minutes. Increased use can reduce the period of stimulation.

Some other signs of Cocaine use are feelings of restlessness, irritability, and anxiety. An appreciable tolerance to the high may be developed, and many addicts report that they seek but fail to achieve as much pleasure as they did from their first exposure. Scientific evidence suggests that the powerful neuropsychological reinforcing property of cocaine is responsible for an individual’s continued use, despite harmful physical and social consequences. In rare instances, sudden death can occur on the first use of cocaine or unexpectedly thereafter. However, there is no way to determine who is prone to sudden death.

HIPAA Violations – Not a Cause of Action For a Lawsuit

There is much confusion among the general public, and even among health care workers, as to the investigation, penalties and individual rights regarding HIPAA violations. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) provides federal law protection of personal health information in the possession of covered entities and allows patients various rights with respect to that information. The Privacy Rule is not overly restrictive however, and it permits the disclosure of information when necessary to facilitate patient care and for some other important purposes.

Individuals, organizations, and agencies that meet the definition of a covered entity under HIPAA must comply with the Rules’ requirements to protect the privacy and security of health information and must provide individuals with certain rights with respect to their information. If an entity is not a covered entity, it does not have to comply with the Privacy Rule or the Security Rule. Covered entities include health care providers, health plans and health care information clearing houses. Your best friend, family member or neighbor, unless they are also your health care provider, is not a covered entity.

The Privacy Rule, a Federal law, gives you rights over your information and sets rules and limits on who can look at and receive your information. The Privacy Rule applies to all forms of individuals’ protected information, whether electronic, written, or oral. The Security Rule, a Federal law that protects this information in electronic form, requires entities covered by HIPAA to ensure that electronic information is secure.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights(OCR) is responsible for enforcing the Privacy and Security Rules. Enforcement of the Privacy Rule began April 14, 2003 for most HIPAA covered entities. HIPAA does not create or allow for an individual to bring a lawsuit against a covered entity. If an individual believes a violation of their right to privacy or private medical information security under HIPAA has occurred, they must file a complaint with the OCR if they wish action be taken. Individuals of course have the right to file a lawsuit based on violation of privacy, etc., but such lawsuits are not a part of HIPAA itself.

The OCR investigates all complaints according to a defined process. If a violation has occurred, the OCR may fine the entity and/or have the entity take corrective action. For criminal misuse of private information the Department of Justice may bring criminal charges.

Does Wrinkle Filler Creams Work? Here is the Truth

Most women don’t mind getting older because is a natural process of life, but what they cant stand is getting wrinkles because it makes them look less attractive and older than they are.

Celebrities and famous people use many types of anti aging and skin care products to cover up their wrinkles and look younger.

But it is not just for celebrities you too can have a beautiful looking skin without the need of invasive treatments like face lifts or plastic surgery.

Wrinkle filler creams are becoming very popular and many people use them to cover up their wrinkles and thus look younger. However you have to be careful on what wrinkle creams you use, most women try many different products that don’t work in hope to find the one that works well.

There are some effective anti wrinkle creams, but if you are going to use a wrinkle filler cream you have to know that you are not removing or reducing wrinkles from your skin, you are just covering them up for a very short while.

I have no problem in using a wrinkle filler cream as long as is made of just natural or organic ingredients that wont hurt the skin in any way, shape or form.

Most people don’t give a second though about what ingredients does the cream include and that is wrong because many wrinkle filler creams use ingredients like alcohol to cover up wrinkles.

You should not use a cream with alcohol because it drys up your skin and thus it wrinkles your skin. So although the wrinkle filler cream might actually cover your fine lines, you are hurting your skin and in the long run your skin will show up more wrinkles.

Now, as a said before as long as the cream uses natural ingredients there should not be a problem, the dangers are when a cream contain chemicals and synthetic ingredients.

Some are collagen fillers and customers have actually shown positive quick results, but collagen will not penetrate your skin, that means that it is only on the surface of your skin and will be gone a short while later.

My recommendation is that if you want to use a filler cream, do it if it only contains natural and safe ingredients but also use an anti aging cream that will work deep in your skin to activate the natural production of collagen in your body.

How to Store Your Kayak For Winter Properly

If you’re someone who is just getting started with kayaking, it’s important that you take the time to learn how to store your kayak for winter. Winter storage is something many people miss out on and then when they go to pick their kayak back up for a kayak trip in the spring, they find out it doesn’t look or function the same.

Here are the main things you must know in order to store it properly.

Clean The Outer Side Thoroughly

The first thing you should be doing is making sure you wash the entire kayak down with a hose first. This will clean off any dirt, salt, or other substances that might have gotten onto it during the summer runs.

A typical garden hose will work perfectly for this – just be sure you are cleaning all sides as best as you can.

Don’t Neglect The Inner Portion

Once you’re finished cleaning the outside, then your next step is to also clean the inside out as well. Usually water will get into the kayak as you’re running the waves and if the salt sits there over winter it could weaken the boat.

Don’t forget to clean in and around the handles as well – every area needs to be washed with clean water.

Stand It At An Angle

After you’ve finished watering it down, then the next thing to do will be to stand it upright at an angle. This will allow all the water to run off it and then when you store it, if it happens to rain or snow (if you’re storing it outside), the water there will also run off it.

You never want to let water sit in your kayak and accumulate when you store it over the winter.

Add A Cover

Finally, if you’re planning on storing it outside and the area you’re thinking about does get a fair amount of sunlight, then you should also cover it with some form of tarp or other material.

This will be important to protect it from UV rays, which can really damage your boat.

So keep these tips in mind to store your kayak over winter. If you do them immediately after you finish your last trip, then you know you will be able to pick your kayak up again next year in the similar condition you left it.

Motorcycle Intercoms – How to Choose the Best Motorcycle Intercom For You

Without a motorcycle intercom, motorcycle riding is a solitary experience. When you’re riding alone it’s a good way to clear your head or get your thoughts together. But if you’ve got a passenger, or you’re riding with another biker, inevitably you’ll want to talk to them. Motorcycle intercom systems that mount in your helmet let you do that.

The problem is that there are so many to choose from in such a wide price range. It’s hard to decide which one to choose. And given that motorcycle intercoms have to work in an extremely difficult environment, choosing the right one can make the difference between enjoying your new purchase or hating it. This motorcycle intercom review will hopefully make your decision easier.

Let’s start with a broad overview of the types of motorcycle intercoms available.

Acoustic Motorcycle Intercom

The most basic form of motorcycle intercom is the acoustic intercom. By acoustic I mean that it doesn’t use electronics at all. It just uses hollow tubes that your voice travels through. They’re like the old ships where the captain yells down a tube to the engine room to tell them to “give it more steam.”

These systems have rubber-tipped tubes that insert in your ear the same way an earplug would. There is also a mouthpiece tube for you to talk into and all the tubes connect into a junction box.

One of the positives is that there are no batteries or electronics to mess with. That makes them very dependable. However, there is no amplification which means there is no way to adjust the volume or filter out wind noise. So at higher speeds, it will be more difficult to hear. Another problem is that some people find the “earplugs” uncomfortable in their ears for long periods.

Obviously these acoustic intercoms only work for rider-to-passenger and not bike-to-bike.

Wired Motorcycle Intercom

The next step up is wired intercoms. These systems have wires that run from the rider and passenger into a central control box that houses the electronics and battery.

Just like the acoustic intercom, with a wired system you don’t have to worry about any external interference like you do with wireless technologies, unless you add a radio handheld communicator for bike-to-bike talking to your system. Some wired units let you plug in an FRS/GMRS radio, which is described in the wireless technology section below. The radio requires voice activation for it to work.

One of the issues some people have is that the wiring can be a little bit of a pain. Every time you and a passenger get on and off the bike you have to remember to unplug the units. Depending on how you have it set up, this could be two or three plugs.

Wireless Intercom Technology

There are four types of radio technologies used in the U.S. for motorcycle intercoms. They are GMRS, FRS, FM, and Bluetooth. There are also wired intercoms that enable you to plug into a handheld Citizens Band (CB) radio that has voice activation.

Frequency Modulation (FM) radio is similar to the FM radio you listen to, but for motorcycle intercoms a narrower frequency is used. Like FM radio, these systems can produce clear sound, as long as the distance between them isn’t too great. FM radio works best when there are no obstructions such as hills between the transmitter and receiver. If long range is the most important feature, then GMRS intercoms will provide better performance.

The Family Radio Service (FRS) and the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) are the modern equivalents to the old walkie talkies you may have had when you were a kid. FRS radios typically have a maximum range of two miles with few obstructions in between, while GRMS radios communicate up to several miles. Like FM, these are public frequencies so other people can hear your conversations and vice versa. In some heavily populated areas these FRS/GRMS radios are heavily used, while out on the open road you should have fairly private conversations.

One nice thing with the FRS and GMRS radios is that you can go to your local discount store and purchase a cheap handheld radio that will communicate with these units. If someone were following you in a car, or they had a wired motorcycle intercom system that lets them plug in an FRS/GMRS handheld radio, they can communicate with you. The downside of this was just mentioned in that there are millions of these radios out there so in heavily populated areas you’ll pick up lots of other transmissions. Also GMRS radios require an FCC license for legal use.

Bluetooth is the latest technology to hit motorcycle intercoms. Not only can these systems communicate totally wirelessly from rider to passenger, they can be used to communicate from bike to bike. Although with these systems the range is not in miles, it is in hundreds of feet. Since you are likely riding close to your buddies, this is not usually a problem. Although, range can be as much as 800 to 1600 feet.

The Bluetooth range limitation actually works as an advantage since it limits the amount of outside interference you’ll get. Also, since you must program two units to work together, you won’t pick up conversations from other people with Bluetooth devices…and they won’t be able to hear you. You won’t have to worry about your conversations listened to by anyone else.

If you want Bluetooth wireless communication there is one thing to watch for. Some units that say they are Bluetooth use FRS or GMRS to communicate bike-to-bike and the Bluetooth is just used to communicate with a Bluetooth enabled cell phone or other device.

Bluetooth intercoms also usually have some other features you won’t find on other types of intercoms such as:

Integrate with Bluetooth enabled cell phones and automatically answer calls totally hands free.
Enjoy your favorite stereo music from your A2DP enabled cell phone or MP3 player
Listen to the audio navigation message from your Bluetooth enabled GPS.

Some Bluetooth intercoms only have one ear speaker while others have two.

Motorcycle Helmet Intercom Features

Here are features to look for as you are shopping for an intercom to use with your motorcycle helmet:

If you may be riding in the rain, get a system that says it’s waterproof and not just water resistant. Some riders will put a water resistant system in a plastic baggie and that works for them.
You can get systems that have a headset speaker for one ear or both ears. Installation and moving the intercom to another helmet is easier for systems with only one ear, but some people want to hear sound in both ears.
Most systems have voice activation of some kind to keep the headset quiet when no talking is occurring. This voice activation often has the ability to be disabled and a push-to-talk switch used instead.
Many intercoms have noise reduction capabilities with digital signal processing to help reduce the noise they pick up from the microphone. The faster you drive, or the windier it is, the more important this feature is.
If you want music, look for a system that has a built-in FM stereo radio tuner or an auxiliary stereo input for a Walkman, MP3, iPod, or satellite radio unit. You can also use this input to receive driving directions from a voice prompted GPS unit.
Some systems mount on your helmet, while others have capability to mount on your belt clip or bike. If the system is big and bulky, you may want the ability to mount it on your bike.
You can integrate some intercoms with cell phones so you can talk while you ride. They require special cables or you can get motorcycle intercoms that have Bluetooth capability so they connect to your Bluetooth-enabled phone wirelessly.

Once you find the right motorcycle intercom for you, it will really make your ride with other people much more enjoyable. You’ll wonder how you got along without it. You typically get what you pay for when you buy motorcycle intercoms, but even a bad motorcycle intercom is better than none at all.

How to Make Your Own Concrete Curbs for Pennies Per Foot

This is a great idea I saw a few years ago. It worked well then and works great now, with the new plastic gutters that are available.

Way back then gutters where wood or steel. The guys I saw used wood and oiled it so the concrete did not stick. They still had some problems removing the curbs but it worked!

What you do is get a couple of 10′ lengths of plastic gutter.

Make some braces to stop it from stretching open when you fill it. These can be made with 1″ x 6″ boards placed along each side and braced with stakes driven into the ground.

You will also need to cut a couple of pieces to cover each end. These can be screwed on to the brace boards.

Oil the inside of the gutter and fill with concrete!

In a couple of days remove your 1 x 6 boards and you will be able to take out your new curb. They come out easy because you can stretch the plastic a bit to help with removal.

Don’t try to drag the curb around for at least a week, cover it with plastic and keep it wet for 7 days. It should be cured enough to use buy then if your temperature is in the 60 – 70 degree range. If it is colder you should wait longer, or until late Spring or Summer!!

It is also a good plan to add a length of 1/2″ rebar to the curb when it is about 1/2 poured. This will make it far stronger and less likely to break when you are maneuvering it around.

These are VERY heavy so try to make them as close as you can to where the will be living. I always try to do them so all I have to do is roll them over and they are in place.

A good aggregate type mix is best for this.

How To Build A Patio Cover

If willing to experiment and build a Patio Cover, hammer out questions as to why you need a Patio Cover, for what purpose, whether it would be painted or made with wood, prefabricated aluminum or PVC, and if permission is required from state or city authorities. Remember that a patio is an extension of the house, generally not more than 12 feet and single-storied. The patio can be fully covered or have no cover. No special skills are required for building a Patio Cover except co-coordinating your patience, dimension of area, number of wood or aluminum panels and material required.

Begin with the necessary spade work according to weather conditions, area and usage of patio. The next step is selecting material from a comprehensive range, including polycarb panels for high summer or winter temperatures, vinyl opaque all weather conditions, vinyl translucent and clear panels suitable for use in milder weather conditions, aluminum pan roof that is cool, durable and requiring little maintenance, or insulated foam panels providing insulation for a strong low-maintenance roof. The panels should fit and install easily, and offer design flexibility. Check if the gutter system is accessible for cleaning whether it is w-pan gutter, roll form gutter or extruded gutter and valance.

For that professional Patio Cover you would need appropriate tools; you can order a complete tool kit or purchase one. The tools required would be a 3/8″” drill bit, hack saw or electric jig saw with fine-toothed blade for metal, a caulking gun, measuring tape, screwdriver, hammer, metal snips, socket and shank, crescent wrench, level, carpenter’s square, ladders, heavy duty pencils, masonry and nuts and bolts. If the patio is attached to the house then the existing support system will help cover to fit easily. For a free-standing patio the cover will have to be fitted on all four sides, depending on shape. The building instructions will guide you step by step.

What is Myelodysplastic Syndrome?

Myelodysplastic Syndrome can affect a person regardless of age, although those who are more advanced in age look like they are more susceptible. With thousands of cases reported each year, the disease is more common in men than in women.

Persons with this affliction have blood cells in their bone marrow which do not develop into functioning ones. Some of the blood cells may even die in the marrow, resulting in decreasing amounts of blood cells in the blood. The remaining functioning blood cells will not be enough to handle what the body needs them to do. Some of the symptoms that patients show are infections, tiredness, anemia, bruises and/or bleeding – all results of low levels of functioning blood cells. Without platelets to form blood clots, the smallest wound can bleed profusely, and simple infections may turn into more serious problems.

Myelodysplastic Syndrome’s initiation is equivalent to AML or acute myelogenous leukemia. The former can develop into the latter if the marrow contains leukemic cells that grow out of control. A common symptom of AML sufferers is joint pain. There are Myelodysplastic Syndrome patients who live with it without any life-changing issues. There are instances when the disease does not develop for years; even blood cell count changes are insignificant. The person is able to live a normally functioning life.

With the different variations of the Myelodysplastic Syndrome, there is still no concrete origin for the syndrome. Some of the factors that seem to encourage its development include earlier treatments involving radiation (for another type of cancer); the treatment used to kill cancer cells affect the normal operation of the bone marrow. Radiation can also heighten the syndrome’s risk of developing into AML. In relation, the risk of developing AML is increased with high levels Benzene exposure in an industrial setting. The government has regulated the use of Benzene in industrial plants to decrease the adverse health effects, although the results of the regulation are not concretely proven. There is no irrevocable cure for Myelodysplastic Syndrome, but it can be treated with chemotherapy, stem cell transplants and blood transfusions, which all contribute to the patient having a better quality of life.
